“Education is the kindling of a flame, not the filling of a vessel.”
― Socrates

HELLO, world!

This is our very FIRST blog post for the year! We  are SO excited to be blogging and learning WITH the world! We hope you stop by and leave comments because it is SO exciting to learn BEYOND our classroom walls! We BET you’re wondering WHY it took us so long to get our first post up and running. Well … we had a LOT of DECISIONS to make. We had to talk about what a blog even IS! We talked about how to be safe online … AND offline. We EVEN talked about what it means to be good CITIZENS on AND offline! As if THAT wasn’t enough, we had to figure out what to CALL ourselves this year TOO! THAT was a HUGE discussion because “branding” is IMPORTANT! PHEW!!! We’ve been BUSY!

We are SO excited about this new learning adventure!

We are SO excited about this new learning adventure!

We had a TON of great suggestions for names. It was hard to choose … but … once we VOTED, it was CLEAR! And, SO, here we ARE:

Woo HOO! What an EXCITING adventure we will have this year!

Woo HOO! What an EXCITING adventure we will have this year!

So that you could get to know us JUST a little more, as we begin learning journey together, we’ve EACH chosen a SPECIAL word. A word that describes WHO we are … a special quality we each have that we are especially proud of. We hope you enjoy the slideshow! And … we look FORWARD to learning WITH you! *If you want to keep up with our posts, think about “subscribing” up at the top … THAT way, each and EVERY time we publish a NEW blog post, it will come RIGHT to your MAILBOX. (Make sure you click on the link on the email, though, otherwise you miss out on a LOT of the cool PHOTOS!)

WE wonder:

  • What is YOUR word? WHY would you choose that special word to describe yourself? We’d LOVE to hear about it!

Hello Mrs Renton and grade 3 class,

Great job on the blog posting! I love all the colorful letters and descriptive words that suit your personality’s!

My word is……funny (Carter helped me pick it). I am funny because I am always joking around and apparently give terrible advice (which I think is funny). Carter thinks it is funny that I promise to make comments every time you blog!

    Looking forward to it!

    Talk soon!

      Hi Leigh Ann!

Thank you for leaving an AWESOME comment for us AND for subscribing to our blog! That made us feel SO special! We loved your compliment. It made us feel SO good!

We love your special word. We can tell, because of your comment, that it is a PERFECT word for you! It makes us wonder what the worst/funniest advice is you have given anyone?!? We think it would be fun to hear!!! We wonder why Carter thinks it is funny that you have promised to leave a comment every time we blog. We don’t think it’s funny. We think it is AWESOME! We LOVE it when people leave us comments!

Thank you, Leigh Ann! You made our day!

      The Blogging Hawks 🙂

PS Sorry … this was an AMAZING comment … the FIRST time we wrote it. And, then, the “internet broke”!!! We teased Carter and told him he needed to tell you that your comment broke the blog! It was fun to watch him “squirm” … but … he knew we were teasing. Apparently the whole system was “down” for a while … not just our blog! PHEW! 😉

  2. David

Hello Mrs. Renton and the Blogging Hawks,

You all had amazing names and great pictures.

“Educational” would be my word because I like to help students in class because I’m a retired teacher. ;D

    • The Blogging Hawks

      Greetings, David!

Thank you for the lovely comment and compliment! We enjoyed your comment so very much!

We think your word is PERFECT … because you are coming in to help our class make GEODES today! We think you must love learning and helping! We can’t wait to work with you today! We think it’s nice that you told us you were a retired teacher! We wonder what your favourite part of teaching was.

      The Blogging Hawks 🙂

  3. Stacie

Hi Blogging Hawks! Great job on your blog and I loved seeing all of your pictures and words! My word would be ‘grateful’ because I’m so thankful for all the wonderful things and people in my life. Keep up the great work!

    • The Blogging Hawks

      Hi Stacie!

Thank you for the nice comment! We like your word “grateful” because it means you are really enjoying your life. We think it’s important to be grateful for things in our lives because we are ALL pretty lucky! WE are grateful that you visited our blog! We hope you keep checking back!

  4. Renelle

Mrs Renton and class. This blog is a wonderful educational tool.

Colby helped me come up with the word ‘love’. We love everything about life and what we are fortunate enough to have. We live in a country of opportunity, and we are fortunate to have such great family and friends….and teachers! Papa always told us that the only thing big enough to concur any obstacle no matter how big is love.

    • The Blogging Hawks

      Hi Renelle!

Thank you for the beautiful comment. You described your word so well. We like your word because love is an important thing in ALL our lives. You are right. Love can make you feel like you can do ANYTHING … even get through the ROUGH patches. Papa sounds like a VERY smart man. It sounds like the word suits you perfectly.

We enjoyed your comment, Renelle! Keep checking back!

  5. Davis

Hello Blogging hawks this is Davis (Colby’s brother) I’ve been looking at the blog and am exited that you guys are having fun blogging with Mrs.Renton. I am glad that you bloggers have been putting new things on all week. I can’t wait to see what other amazing things you guys put on this blog. I hope that you bloggers are having lots of fun! I know I did!!!

    • The Blogging Hawks

      Hi Davis!

We LOVED your comment on our blog because we know that you are an old Battalion Blogger! We’re glad to see that you are still checking out the blog and leaving comments for us! We are having fun on the blog, so far, although it is sometimes hard to keep up with all the awesome comments people leave. Also, it’s been a while since we have posted because we have been so busy with SLAs. We are going to fix that, though, because we think we’ll have a post coming up REAL soon!

We wonder what YOUR special word is … because … we know your brother AND your Mom’s now!!!

      The Blogging Hawks 🙂

  6. Nikki

Hello Grade 3! My word is “creative”. I am always thinking of new ideas and implementing them in my family’s lives.

    • The Blogging Hawks

      Hi Nikki!

What a lovely comment. We like your word. Some students came up with creative too. We think it must be fun to live in a family that is creative and always thinking of new things. It would be an adventure! We wonder what is one of the most creative things you’ve come up with?

      The Blogging Hawks 🙂

  7. Justin

Hello Grade 3 Blogging Hawks. My word is “curious” because I’m interested in how things work and wanting to know why they work the way they do! Keep up the good work on the blog! 🙂

    • The Blogging Hawks

      Hi Justin!

The comment you left us is really nice. Some of us find it interesting that your word is curious because some of us have the same interests! We found it tough to find just one word that really described who we are! So many of us love to know about how things work and why they work the way they do. We wonder what the neatest thing is that you have fixed to figure out how it works?

      The Blogging Hawks 🙂

  8. colleen

Hi I will travelling to London England and Israel Is there something economical that might be valuable to your Global classroom. regards Colleen

    • The Blogging Hawks

      Hi Colleen.

Thank you so much for thinking about us. We can’t think of anything you could buy us. The best thing you could do for us is to just keep checking back and leaving us lovely comments like you just did! We hope you have a FABULOUS trip!

      The Blogging Hawks 🙂

  9. Claire

    Hi Blogging Hawks!

It’s great to see what all of you have been learning! I love how you decided your name and how you voted. I was one of the Battalion Bloggers. (last year.) I had lots of fun…we made marionettes and did lots of fun things like that. I hope you enjoy the blog and Mrs.Renton.

P.S. you have the BEST teacher in the world!

    • The Blogging Hawks

      Hi Claire!

Thank you for the amazing comment! You made Mrs. Renton blush!!! (She says thank you … but … she knows that you will probably fall in love with ALL your teachers!!! 😉 )

Some people, the first day of school, saw the marionettes … and they wondered what they were! Mrs. Renton has already ordered the beads and the eyes so that we can make them this year too. We think one of the HARDEST things is going to be choosing which country to make our marionettes from! How did YOU decide what country to dress your marionette from?

Thanks for the great comment, Claire! We hope you keep checking back with us! We wonder if you’re going to try making a geode this year because we know you class made snowflakes LAST year!

      The Blogging Hawks 🙂

  10. Sarah

And the blogging adventure begins for this year! Wow! Hello Blogging Hawks! I like your name very much because some First Nations tribes believe Hawks are messengers.

Your words were so varied and insightful. My word is KIND because I strive to be that every day. Kindness is so important, but sometimes it’s easy to forget about! I think we can all find ways to be more kind to each other.

I’m excited to see what else you post on your blog. Have fun!

    • The Blogging Hawks

      Hi Sarah!

Thank you for the lovely comment! We love how you think “kind” is very important because it IS! Have you ever read Ordinary Mary’s Extraordinary Deed, by Emily Pearson? The lesson in the book is how one kind deed can change the world. We bet your KIDS would enjoy it too! Mrs. Renton told us that you live in Brazil. It’s funny, because ONE of the Hawks said, “HOLY … what TIME does SHE get UP?!?” because the time stamp on your comment was 4:12 am!!! So … we GOOGLED the current time in Brazil and discovered that you are four hours ahead of us!!! Right now, at 9:30 am we are really just starting our day. In Brazil it’s 1:30 pm … that means you’ve probably already eaten lunch!!! Time zones! Crazy!

We think it’s neat that you told us about how some First Nations Tribes believe Hawks are messengers. You’re right … we ARE kind of messengers because we are blogging with the world! How cool is that?

Thanks for your special message, Sarah! We love that you are following our blog all the way from Brazil … which is RIGHT beside PERU!!! 😉

  11. Marcus

    Hi Mrs.Renton

I’m bringing a GEODE to school tomorrow and it is from the Sea of Cortez! I think it has Quartz crystals on it,i think that u will like it 😉
Because it isn’t cracked open! it looks like a big chunk of dirt rocks and crystals it kinda looks like it hasn’t been polished! i have a big one and a small one, there unique!!

    Marcus 🙂

    • Laurie Renton

      Hi Marcus!

What a LOVELY surprise to come home and see your comment waiting for me!!! It MADE my day! 😉

I can NOT wait to see your special geode tomorrow! Wow! The Sea of CORTEZ? I wonder how many of the Blogging Hawks will know where that is? We MAY have to Google Earth that! I am SO excited to see what it looks like! I agree. Sometimes it’s FUN not to crack them open … just like I did with the mud balls I found while fossil hunting on the Island. I love the whole “mystery” of it!!! Too bad we couldn’t find a way of X-RAYING to see the secrets they are hiding!

Would you like to pull people out to look at your geodes with the big magnifying glasses like Thomas and Carter will be doing with THEIR treasures?

      Mrs. Renton 🙂

  12. Marah

Dear blogging hawks and miss Renton.
I am so happy to be part of this incredible team, the blog is very cool! and I am proud to be part of it.

    From Amy

PS You guys are doing great and i miss you Mrs.Renton

  14. David

Wow Blogging Hawks, what a special “Thank You” card you sent home with Marcus. Thank you. Making Geodes with the class was great and it reminded me that the best part of teaching is the “STUDENTS”.

    See you again soon.

    • The Blogging Hawks

      Hi David!

We’re glad you liked the thank you card! We had a TON of fun making geodes and snowflakes with you!

      The Blogging Hawks 🙂

  15. David

Mrs. Renton and The Blogging Hawks,

Another big “WOW” and another big “Thank you” for my Geode.

Now, it has a special place on my display shelf and looks great.

I hope your Geodes and Snowflakes also look great.

    • Laurie Renton

      Hi David!

I LOVE how you are leaving awesome comments for us on our blog! We had SO much fun working with you the other day … we felt you needed your OWN “geode”!!! Sadly, as the moisture begins to evaporate from the crystals, they will begin to turn white. I am experimenting with a clear coat spray paint to see if that will stop the evaporation process by sealing the crystals. I won’t know if it actually works for several weeks, though. Fingers are crossed. We can’t wait to show you our awesome collection of geodes and snowflakes. We will have them displayed during our “rock museum” in November. We sure hope you can make it … we’ll send out more information as the date gets closer. *You know you are ALWAYS welcome to drop by to check them out BEFORE then too! 😉

Laurie (on behalf of the Blogging Hawks) 🙂
