Earth Day … today and EVERY day!

Today was EARTH Day! We thought it would be a GREAT day to get out and do some clean up!

We went prepared, using some bags as gloves to keep our hands protected and clean!

We didn't THINK the playground looked THAT bad ... but ... when we REALLY looked, it was SHOCKING!

We had ONE bag for RECYCLING and ONE bag for TRASH!

Even though it LOOKED disgusting ... it was a TON of fun working together ... and beautifying our playground!

We even got to STOP to enjoy some NATURE along the way ... Spring really IS coming ... the LADYBUGS were out!

If you look REALLY hard ... you MIGHT even be able to spot the GRASSHOPPER we were shocked to find under a bunch of garbage. Doesn't he KNOW it could still SNOW in Calgary?

It's a good thing Earth Day was TODAY ... and not LAST week when there was still a bunch of SNOW on the ground! Just LOOK at this garbage!

The time FLEW by ... who KNEW that working together, doing a DIRTY job, could be SO fun and feel SO good?

When we were DONE it felt SO good throwing our garbage into the GARBAGE can ... and the RECYCLING into the RECYCLING bin... where it belonged in the FIRST place

I bet a FEW people are going to be SURPRISED when they find their missing gloves, jackets, scarves and HATS in the Lost and Found!

I bet a FEW people are going to be SURPRISED when they find their missing gloves, jackets, scarves and HATS in the Lost and Found after spending SEVERAL months OUTSIDE buried in the SNOW!

We think Earth Day should be 24/7 … 365 … that means ALL day, EVERY day … ALL year long!

An easy way to BEGIN taking care of the earth is to:

  • pick up trash … even when it’s NOT yours!
  • don’t litter to begin with!
  • recycle stuff that CAN be recycled!
  • keep the lights off when you don’t need them!
  • work TOGETHER … it can make a dirty job, like cleaning up the school yard, go by THAT much FASTER!
  • hint: do NOT pick up sharp objects like glass or needles or anything else that looks dangerous … get adult help!

What do YOU think?

WE think you did a fabulous job on Earth Day!! It is great to see your smiling faces as you worked to clean your playground. If we all followed your tips every day, wouldn’t our Earth be in great shape!!!

      Hi Daytime Grandma and Grandpa!

Thanks for your comment! We really enjoyed our Earth Day cleanup. But, sadly, there’s MORE garbage out there again! Ugh! We don’t feel very good about seeing all that garbage starting to pile up again. We don’t understand WHY people do that because NONE of us would do that in our own HOMES. The earth IS our home … it’s not different than the houses we live in.

We DON’T know what the answer is … but MANY of us go out of our way to pick up garbage that ISN’T ours now … instead of walking past it!

    Hi Battalion Hawk Bloggers,
This is Mrs. Boulos’ Grade Six class in Ontario. We really enjoyed your blog post about Earth Day. It has inspired us to be “greener” and more eco-friendly. Our class has a new slogan – “PUT WASTE IN THE RIGHT PLACE!” If we recycle and compost more we will have less garbage in our landfills. We have a green club at our school and we have “Litterless Lunch” on Wednesdays. Do you have a green club in your school? We think Mother Nature appreciates your contribution to our Earth.

      Hi Mrs. Boulos’s Sensational Sixes!

Thank you for leaving an amazing comment! It feels GOOD to know that not just ADULTS are commenting on our blog … but STUDENTS are TOO! We have never had a grade six class from Eastern Canada comment on our blog before! We were SO excited when we saw your comment! We’re sorry it’s taken us a while to get back to you … we’ve been so busy and sometimes it’s tough to find time in the day to reply. It’s important for us to reply to EVERYONE who leaves a comment … sometimes it just take us a little while to do it!

We LOVE your new slogan “Put waste in the RIGHT place!” It’s surprising, to us, how quickly the playground becomes filled with trash again. We cleaned the school yard two or three weeks ago … and … yet … it’s dirty AGAIN! Our school has a slogan too! “Be the best FOR the world!” We think this slogan encompasses looking after everything on earth to the best of our ability. Boy … we sure wish the GARBAGE wouldn’t gather up like it does. Earth Day would be EVERY day. At recess today, maybe a few of us will volunteer to pick up the garbage that others have left behind.

We have something like the “Green Club” at our school. It’s called the “Wellness Club”. Our wellness club is for students who want to share good healthy habits with the rest of the school. We also have grade sixes who come to all the classes and pick up recycling for us! Unfortunately, we don’t do litterless lunch Wednesdays anymore … but … we SHOULD! Some of us do litterless lunches EVERY day, on our own, and a few of us think we will start trying to do it more!

Thank you for your amazing comment! We sure hope the Sensational Sixes check back with us again!

    Dear Battalion Hawk Bloggers,

That looks like that was really gross but, that proves that people are sometimes careless for there garbage. I had to do that last fall for an assignment to see how much our school littered and we found so much garbage, so that proves that my school is careless sometimes too. Hope you are having a good day.

      Hi Larissa!

Thank you for leaving a comment! You are right … there WAS really gross stuff on the playground while we were cleaning up. We spent about an hour cleaning our school yard up … about a month ago! Do you know what it looks like now? It looks like we NEVER cleaned it up!!! That’s not good! A few years ago our school did litterless lunches. We think it would be a good idea to try that again … and even include literless recesses … maybe THAT way we could have a litter-free school!
